Abstract

This subject builds on the central concepts, modes of enquiry and structure of the content of mathematics. Students will explore the principles and practices underpinning the teaching of mathematics and develop a deep understanding of current syllabus documents that will inform and guide their pedagogical practice. This subject also reinforces the function of mathematics as numerate and literate practice and the role and value of Information and Communication Technologies [ICT] as a pedagogical tool.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to implement and evaluate a problem-based lesson that is differentiated to meet diverse learning needs
  • be able to demonstrate an awareness of a range of strategies for teaching primary mathematics
  • be able to demonstrate a broad and critical understanding of current syllabus documents
  • be able to demonstrate an awareness of how to use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) as a pedagogical tool
  • be able to integrate reflective practice into the development of their professional teaching practice

  • Principles and practices for teaching of statistics and probability
  • Teaching space and geometry
  • Teaching Patterns and Albegra
  • Teaching Measurement
