EMR105 Health and Physical Education Studies (8)

Abstract

In this subject, students will learn to clearly express their knowledge, understanding and skills pertaining to health and physical performance concepts. They will identify strategies for improving health, participation and performance and discuss the links between individual health behaviour, social issues and community health status. Students will also be able to demonstrate a detailed understanding of the interrelated roles of individuals, groups and governments in the management and promotion of health. They will demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationships between the various factors that impact on physical performance and current information about health, participation and performance.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • demonstrate and apply an understanding of physical performance concepts and the nature of holistic health (physical, social, emotional, mental);
  • explain interrelationships between the various factors that impact on physical performance and holistic health;
  • identify strategies for improving health, participation and performance;
  • discuss the links between individual health behaviour, social issues and community health status;
  • recognise the interrelated roles of individuals, groups and governments in the management and promotion of health;
  • construct arguments about holistic health, participation and performance by using relevant examples and current information.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • energy systems and training methods;
  • adaptations to training and exercise and benefits of physical activity for children;
  • skill acquisition, fundamental movement skills and performance appraisal;
  • motivation, anxiety and physical education/sports avoidance in children;
  • health and physical activity promotion across the lifespan (with an Australian focus);
  • nutrition and healthy eating across the lifespan;
  • mental health and young people;
  • Australia's health priorities and health care in Australia;
  • skills for better health and health literacy.
