ENG291 Engineering Portfolio - Introductory (14)

Abstract


In this subject students draw upon their experience in industry to demonstrate that they are progressively obtaining the skills and attributes expected of a CSU engineering graduate. Students will be required to construct a professional online portfolio to provide evidence of their development. Progress in the portfolio will show that they are exhibiting the required graduate attributes at an introductory level. This subject is assessed by a portfolio of work and experiences representing their preparedness for engineering practice, including presenting to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • demonstrate knowledge of the stages of the engineering design process;
  • compile appropriate artifacts to demonstrate engineering knowledge;
  • document professional skills obtained and improved in the workplace;
  • apply standard engineering methods to well-defined engineering problems;
  • apply a range of engineering tools to practical problems;
  • identify the ethical dimensions of a range of engineering problems; and
  • describe how their work placement experiences have helped develop their identity as a CSU Engineer.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • developing and maintaining a portfolio;
  • reflective practice;
  • technical and non-technical communication, written and verbal; and
  • application and integration of technical knowledge to engineering problems.

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 365 days duration. The portfolio will be compiled during students’ work placement, where they are working in industry as Cadet Engineers. The work placement occurs over a period of approximately a year, and includes paid work, workplace learning, as well as study time for other subjects.  It is anticipated that students will spend an average of an hour and a half per day on portfolio activities while on placement.

Specialised Resources

This subject will be completed while the student is on placement in industry.  Industry placements may require travel and/or relocation depending upon the nature and location of the placement.
