EPT113 Becoming a H/PE and Outdoor Education Professional (8)
Abstract|
This subject introduces students to the profession of Health and Physical Education (HPE) and Outdoor Education (OE) teaching providing opportunities to explore the relationship between practical and disciplinary knowledge. The subject focuses on the development of a broad and critical understanding of the HPE and OE key learning areas, the exploration of the diverse backgrounds and experiences that young people bring to HPE and OE learning contexts, and the development of academically informed teaching philosophies in the area of HPE and OE. Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- examine the historical, socio-cultural and political contexts that have shaped the Health and Physical education and Outdoor Education professions;
- analyse different pedagogical approaches for teaching and learning in Health and Physical Education and Outdoor Education;
- investigate the diverse backgrounds and experiences that young people bring to Health and Physical Education and Outdoor Education learning contexts;
- develop a philosophy of teaching;
- identify personal and professional objectives for the 18 days of placement;
- be conversant with all aspects of WH&S in schools, including legislative, administrative and organisational requirements.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- PDHPE / OE: The big picture;
- where have we come from: Discourses that have shaped the PDHPE and OE curriculums over time;
- the PDHPE teacher / Outdoor Educator– images and roles: Developing a philosophy of teaching in PDHPE / OE;
- different pedagogical approaches for teaching and learning in PDHPE /OE;
- managing the Physical Education / Outdoor Education learning environment, including the implications of WH&S and emotional safety;
- risk management, Child Protection, emergency care and anaphylaxis training;
- successful completion of 18 days professional experience.
