EPT308 Infant Pedagogy for 0-2 Years (8)

Abstract

This subject takes an ecological approach to exploring the interactions, relationships and learning between babies and significant adults, and the learning environment in the early childhood setting. The caring and educative relationships and interactions between baby, family and early childhood educators within the early childhood setting are also examined. The guided practice aspect of this subject is designed to take into account students' previous experiences.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate a working understanding of professional philosophy and knowledge, infant pedagogy and interpersonal skills;
  • be able to discuss and demonstrate the importance of quality caring relationships between the infant, family and educators in the early childhood setting;
  • be able to evaluate the many environmental factors that will influence the type of infant program to be offered within the early childhood setting;
  • be able to use observation and documentation of babies' play to inform and honour the learning trajectory based on what is significant for the baby within an ecological framework;
  • be able to apply or implement sensory-motor play experiences for neurological growth and ongoing learning and development;
  • be able to discuss the implications and meanings of the Early Years Learning Framework, the National Quality Standards and the Code of Ethics in relation to babies, families and the educators;
  • be able to extend and refine their teaching, leadership and management skills utilising knowledge gained through their university studies, and reflection on their teaching and learning;
  • be able to articulate the roles and responsibilities of early childhood teachers in relation to the care and learning of babies;
  • be able to demonstrate competence in a range of pedagogical, social and communication skills commensurate with the professional experience setting and the student's stage in the course.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Professional experience: 20 days in a birth-two year old setting;
  • Exploration of the connections between attachments and learning in infant pedagogy;
  • Observation and documentation of babies' play, relationships and care routines; planning for the babies' learning trajectory throughout the student's professional experience.

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 20 days duration. In this professional experience students will be working with children aged between birth and two years. They will be required to develop caring attachments with the babies,  and professional relationships with parents and other educators.  Additionally they are required to observe babies, plan and evaluate play-based learning experiences based on their theoretical studies and the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), the National early childhood curriculum, and reflect on their developing teaching skills. This professional experience aims to provide the teacher education student with the skills to become the pedagogical leader of the early childhood education and care setting.
