ESA502 Educational Leadership in Contemporary Organisations (8)


This subject considers the changing nature of educational leadership from the perspective of educational and training organisations.  It examines the nature, characteristics and dynamics of global, national and local forces on contemporary educational and training organisations. It analyses how these influences shape and define the contemporary context for educational leadership, drawing on a range of theoretical perspectives including social justice, critical and postmodern approaches to educational leadership and training.  It provides the opportunity for students to reflect on the nature and characteristics of these influences within their own organisation and the moral and ethical implications of these influences for their own leadership practices.  This subject provides the basis for further study concerning policy development and implementation, organisational change and the politics of education in the 21st Century.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  1. develop an understanding of the economic and social forces, internal and external to formal organisations, which impact upon contemporary educational and training organisations;

  2. develop the conceptual tools in which to analyse the varying global, national and local contexts and forces which are impacting upon leadership in educational and training organisations;

  3. demonstrate their understanding of, and capacity to assess and evaluate the dynamic interplay of internal and external organisational forces; and

  4. make links between the range of critical theoretical perspectives and their application within their organisation, in terms of their implications for leadership at both the informal and formal levels.


The subject will cover the following topics:
  1. Organisational change in contemporary educational and training settings;
  2. The impact of global, national and local forces on contemporary educational and training organizations in relation to educational leadership;
  3. Critical, social justice and postmodern theories and research relating to educational and training organisations and their implications for educational leadership at the informal and formal levels, and
  4. The moral and ethical implications of global, national and local forces in relation to students’ own leadership practices.
