ESG401 Extending & Enriching the Curriculum for Gifted Learners (8)

Abstract

Gifted children are a group of students in classrooms across Australia with particular learning characteristics and needs. This subject introduces students to the range of definitions of giftedness and the research literature that enables deeper understanding of the needs of gifted children. Students will critique tools of identification, models of provision and classroom strategies to enhance the learning of gifted students in mainstream classrooms. They will design learning experiences utilising a range of models of curriculum design that offer both challenge and support and that demonstrate an understanding of the intellectual, emotional and social needs of gifted children.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- describe intelligence from a number of perspectives;
- articulate a particular definition of giftedness;
- describe the need for commitment to the development of personal, social and intellectual development of the whole child, as well as the cognitive and behavioural characteristics potentially associated with giftedness;
- critique a range of methods for identifying gifted children;
- justify the design and implementation of programs within schools to provide challenging learning for gifted children;
- critique a range of strategies and provisions for gifted children;
- design classroom activities that provide opportunity for the development of creativity.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
-The definitions of intelligence, giftedness and talent. -The myths and misconceptions of giftedness. -The major models of giftedness, with a focus on the work of Francoys Gagné. -Creativity and its development. -Underachievement- its causes and consequences. -The main tools used to identify giftedness. -The needs of young gifted children. -The design and purpose of a range of school provisions including enrichment and acceleration; differentiation and curriculum compacting. -Dual exceptionality. -Supporting parents of gifted children.
