ESS516 Understanding Mathematical Difficulties (8)

Abstract

This subject provides an overview of the acquisition of mathematical concepts and the learning theories underpinning that development.
The subject examines the diagnostic process and the teaching strategies appropriate to individuals with diverse learning needs. Individual diagnosis and analysis are conducted to facilitate programming to meet a particular learner's mathematical needs .
Current research on teaching mathematics to learners with common mathematical difficulties is also examined.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- describe the differences in the way that individuals learn mathematics;
- relate these differences to learning theories;
- describe common mathematical difficulties experienced by diverse learners;
- apply their knowledge of the way individuals learn mathematics to an analysis of the needs of an identified learner; and,
- develop and implement programs that cater for the needs of individuals with diverse learning needs.
 

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- overview of the learning theories underpinning the development of mathematical concepts;
- factors affecting learning such as cognitive, psychomotor, sensory and emotional aspects;
- diagnostic teaching of mathematics: identify; hypothesize; write objectives; design appropriate learning activities and evaluate during and after implementation; and,
- programme implementation for the learning of mathematics appropriate for individuals with diverse learning needs.
