Abstract|
This subject provides an introduction to theory and practice in the leadership role of a teacher librarian. Leadership theory is examined in the current global context of change and reform in school library organisation and services. Evolving views of educational leadership are examined with a particular emphasis on organisational culture, strategic and operational planning including disaster planning, managing for change, using policy and planning documents for advocacy and developing relationships within a 21st century school culture of inquiry. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate knowledge and understaning of leadership theory and identify pathways to building capacity for the development of leadership roles in schools through the work of the teacher librarian;
- be able to relate issues in leadership theory and the decision-making process to the teacher librarian's role in the school;
- be able to apply the principles and methods of strategic and operational planning for change and identify the role of the teacher librarian within these processes;
- be able to identify and develop strategies for using policy and planning documents for advocacy;
- be able to develop a mission statement and identify objectives and outcomes for the delivery of the school's information services; and
- be able to explain leadership within the context of a 21st century school culture of inquiry.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Management theory including leadership, management for change, operational and strategic planning, working in teams
- Leadership in learning environments including leading curriculum design, collaboration, digital learning and staff development
- Communication theory in practice including negotiation, conflict resolution, advocacy and promotion
- Planning processes and procedures in school libraries including the role of vision and mission statements
- Evaluation and review and the wider role of the information specialist
- The teacher librarian as leader, leading from the middle and future roles
