FPS101 Foundations of Paramedical Science 1 (8)

Abstract

This is a Pre-Hospital Care subject that develops the students' knowledge of human body structure and function, and investigates the interrelationships between organ systems that maintain homeostasis. This subject focuses on the concepts that underpin a) Paramedic-based patient assessment, diagnosis and clinical decision-making processes and, b) specific clinical procedures, pharmacological interventions and treatment protocols used by Ambulance Paramedics in the treatment of patients in the emergency care situation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Define and correctly use anatomical and physiological terms, and successfully apply these to situations of prehospital care patient assessment, case-record documentation, and clinical hand-over at hospital.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of homeostasis, and describe the many physiological processes that maintain this state.
- Identify, name and describe the structure and function of the various components of the human body including the cell, body tissues, and the various systems that make up the human organism.
- Apply anatomical and physiological principles to a) Paramedic-based clinical assessment, diagnosis and clinical decision-making, and b) clinical procedures, pharmacological interventions and treatment protocols used by Ambulance Paramedics in the emergency situation.
