GER301 Choices and Options in Later Life (8)

Abstract

Health and well-being in later life are the central themes of this subject. To illustrate these themes, the subject examines theoretical and practical issues associated with the life-style choice and self-determination of older adults. Three topic areas are elucidated: nutrition and ageing; education and learning in later life; reminiscence and ageing; and work and ageing. In addition, students will have the opportunity to select an additional topic area in their field of specialisation or interest.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- distinguish between beneficent and authoritarian approaches to the promotion of self-determination for the older adult in lifestyle choice and provide examples of each;
- understand the roles of professional care-givers in providing support to older adults whose health status and ability to live independently is diminished.
- explain the relationship between health status and nutritional risk factors for older adults in the context of the topic on nutrition;
- explain the concept of "gerogogy" in the context of the topic on education and learning in later life;
- explain the central principles of reminiscence therapy in the context of the topic on reminiscence; and
- analyse an area of specialisation or interest apposite to the self-determination of older adults.
