Abstract

This subject will examine and explore the role of graphic design in the commercial environment, the strategic considerations required and the ongoing implications design decisions can have on businesses.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to resolve design briefs with an understanding of the interconnectedness and implications of design decisions
  • be able to demonstrate strategic thinking to create design solutions in-line with specific requirements
  • be able to choose appropriate computer software and production techniques
  • be able to apply creative, theoretical and technical skills already acquired in the creation of computer based design solutions
  • be able to take artwork to pre-press, print ready stage; understanding spot colour, two colour and four colour printing processes.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Client, stakeholder, consumer
  • The design process and planning in a commercial context: understanding a brief, making strategic design choices, project and time management
  • Introduction to multiple page documents
  • Use and implications of software and technology within the graphic design industry
  • Pre-press and printing production processes
