Abstract


This subject provides an introduction to the social work profession and the human services sector as well as providing an overview of some fields of practice in social work. The subject content encourages students to consider critical issues relating to a range of social work practice contexts.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of practice in the social services and the historical development of social service practice and the social work profession.
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge of the range of vulnerabilities and contexts of practice.
  • be able to understand and participate in discussions that reflect the contested nature of social services
  • be able to identify and draw on relevant foundation knowledge from other disciplines that inform professional practice.
  • be able to identify and draw on relevant foundation knowledge, ethical principles and current debates to inform professional practice.
  • be able to engage in current debates surrounding professional intervention in a variety of contexts
  • be able to identify and discuss ethical and practice issues and dilemmas that arise in specific fields of practice

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Foundations of Social Work; Social service practice and the social work profession; Contested aspects of practice - values, methods and models
  • Core AASW Fields of Practice: Health; Mental Health; Child Protection; Cultural Diversity; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
  • Cultural Context, including: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities; Cross-cultural Practice/Non-Indigenous Communities and Cultural Diversity
  • Additional Fields of Practice, including: Income maintenance and Employment; Gender, sexuality and power Disability practice; Crime and Corrections; Substance Abuse; Social Work with Aged People
