HLT427 Integrating Mental Health, Chronic Illness and Palliative Care (8)

Abstract

This subject will enable students to gain the knowledge and skills required to facilitate the integration of psychological issues into an authentic biopsychosocial model of care.  Students will evaluate the impact mental health issues have on the quality of life of people with advanced chronic & terminal illness and their family and caregivers. Finally they will examine premorbid and psychological problems that can be the result of the chronic and terminal illness.

Previous Bachelor degree must be an allied health degree, a psychology related degree, social work or welfare related degree or nursing degree.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to appraise the impact of psychological issues on the bio and social elements of a diagnosis of an advanced chronic and terminal illness
  • be able to demonstrate appropriate skills to screen and assess psychological issues associated with advanced chronic and terminal illness
  • be able to determine, plan and deliver appropriate and timely therapeutic interventions
  • be able to evaluate the effectiveness of a range of interventions

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • the psychiatry of advanced chronic and terminal illness across the life course
  • disease trajectories of advanced chronic and terminal illnesses
  • presentation of a range of therapeutic assessment tools
  • the selection of appropriate therapeutic assessment tools including the administration and analysis of the results of these tools
  • planning and delivery of therapeutic intervention
  • evaluation of the effectiveness of an intervention
