HSS602 Masters Research (Humanities and Social Sciences) FT (128)

Abstract

Candidates enrolled in the Master of Arts (Research) are required to prepare a research proposal, conduct approved research under supervision, and present the results of their research for examination in an academically conventional form. The thesis shall be no more than 50,000 words in length. The topic of the thesis will be worked out in consultation with an approved supervisor. The student will be expected to demonstrate advanced knowledge of the scholarly debate relevant to the field chosen and a capacity for both critical analysis of and constructive contribution to that debate.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of the scholarly debate relevant to the chosen field of research, including the understanding of recent developments in the field
  • be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to Humanities and Social Sciences research
  • be able to exhibit cognitive skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and to reflect critically on theory and its application through the development of an extended literature review
  • be able to demonstrate cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories and to apply established theories to their chosen field of research
  • be able to demonstrate cognitive, technical and creative skills to generate and evaluate complex ideas and concepts at an abstract level in their chosen field of research
  • be able to demonstrate cognitive and technical skills to design, use and evaluate research and research methods
  • be able to demonstrate communication and technical skills to present a coherent and sustained argument and to disseminate research results to specialist and non-specialist audiences
  • be able to demonstrate technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyse, theorise and disseminate research that makes a constructive contribution to knowledge in the chosen field of research
  • be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills to plan and execute a substantial piece of research
