IKC402 Professional Study in Wiradjuri Community Development (8)
Abstract|
In this subject students will learn about, and operate within Wiradjuri community protocols. Students will work with a community mentor and members of the Wiradjuri community to identify, negotiate, plan and implement a project which seeks to build the capacity of the community in practical and contributory ways. This subject includes a 50 hour community placement where students will undertake activities suggested by the community and engage with the knowledge, history, language and culture of that community, and through these activities students will gain experiential insights that will allow them to contribute to the building of better lives and futures for members of that community.

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to apply the body of knowledge relating to acting according to Wiradjuri community protocols in Wiradjuri community contexts
- be able to think critically and analytically about the role of leadership in the Wiradjuri community
- be able to critically reflect on past practices that have impacted on the Wiradjuri community
- be able to critically reflect on the intergenerational consequences of colonization, dispossession and dislocation
- be able to identify opportunities for community service and development, and nation rebuilding and plan, negotiate and implement a program that contributes to the realization of these opportunities

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Module 1- Act according to Wiradjuri Cultural protocols
- Module 2- Communicate effectively in a Wiradjuri cultural context
- Module 3- Contribute to Wiradjuri Nation rebuilding through participation and work in a Wiradjuri cultural community context.
- Professional Study in Wiradjuri Community Development

Residential School| This subject contains a compulsory 5 day residential school.
The Residential School is compulsory for students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Wiradjuri Language and Cultural Heritage. It will build on students’ previous knowledge of Wiradjuri language. Its main focus will be to develop students’ capacity to hold conversations with one another in Wiradjuri. It will form an integral part of the remainder of this subject. Indigenous Australian students may be eligible to apply for ‘away from base’ funding to support them for the period of the Residential School. 2 x 5 day residentials will be held for IKC402. Students are required to attend a minimum of 5 days with 10 days attendance highly recommended.

Work Place Learning| This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 10 days duration.
The duration of the Workplace Learning is: 10 daysDescription of Workplace Learning Students will spend 50 hours in the Wiradjuri community as a resource for, and as a service to, this community. The 50 hours may be configured as 5 hours per week over 10 weeks or in a configuration negotiated with the subject coordinator.
