Abstract

This subject examines a selection of contemporary issues in the operation of the industrial relations system in Australia. Students will have the opportunity to engage critically with current debates about the effectiveness of institutional settings for addressing the challenges facing workforces in Australia, amidst changing competitive and wider social pressures.

This subject assumes prior knowledge of the industrial relations system in Australia that is covered in INR501.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain some of the current challenges facing the operation of the Australian industrial relations system;
  • be able to critically analyse a selection of current issues in Australian industrial relations;
  • be able to analyse the application of these issues to students' own organisations and for their professional practice;
  • be able to demonstrate advanced skills in synthesising and integrating multiple perspectives on the specification and impacts of current issues; and
  • be able to demonstrate advanced skills in information literacy, communication and problem solving.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • A selection of contemporary issues in Australian industrial relations. Topics will be determined by current developments in legislation, theory and practice.
  • Examples of possible topic areas include: overview of current industrial relations legislation, casualisation and non standard work, regulation of minimum wages, trade union strategies, management strategies, industrial relations and sustainability, workplace violence, gendering of work and pay, industrial conflict.
