ISL468 Applied Arabic II (Bayan) (8)

Abstract

This subject builds on ISL467 and addresses three important techniques used in Classical Arabic linguistic expression (Bayan): Similes, Metaphors and Metonymy. This subject is foundational for the understanding, analysis and interpretation of Classical Arabic texts and literature.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge of Bayan and its usage in classical arabic text
  • be able to analyse and interpret the meaning of classical texts that use the different forms of Bayan
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge of the classifications, rules and techniques used in Bayan
  • be able to write a short text utilising Similes, Metaphors and Metonymy
  • be able to deliver a short speech with proficiency in Arabic linguistic expression

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Arabic Similes elements, classification and particles
  • Eloquence of Similes and its impact on classical Arabic literature
  • Reality and trope in Classical Arabic
  • Permissible Metaphors in Classical Arabic
  • Classification of Metaphors (original and followed)
  • Eloquence in Arabic Metaphors and its application
  • Arabic Metonymy and its classification
  • Eloquence of Metonymy using examples from speech
  • The Impact of knowledge of Bayan on interpreting Classical Arabic texts

Residential School

This subject contains a optional 2 day residential school. The purpose of the optional residential school is to provide an opportunity for exploration of the overall coursework covered. In addition to content review, this part of the course aims to facilitate an interactive session between the teaching academics and students.
Face to face teaching is an important part of learning a language. Students will be involved in small group exercises, discussions, visual presentation and one-on-one sessions with the subject coordinator, lecturers and tutors. This will enable the students and teaching staff to address any issues that may arise. Material and summary content covered in this session will be a valuable contribution towards the major assessment tasks.
