ISL483 History of Islam: From Tribe to World Civilisation (8)
Abstract
This subject discusses critically the history of Muslim societies and civilisation from the death of the Prophet Muhammad to the present era. The periods of Rightly Guided Caliphs, the Umayyad Empire, the Abbasid Empire, the Ottoman Caliphate and other major sultanates will be studied. There will be particular focus on the major historic events and patterns as well as the intellectual, economic, social and cultural aspects of the Islamic civilisation. The Muslim contribution to science and civilisation will be evaluated critically. The decline of the Muslim world; the impact the European colonisation on Muslim societies; the post colonial era culminating in the present day relationship between the West and the Muslim world will also be discussed. |

- be able to evaluate critically how Crusades and Mongol invasion of the Muslim world produced a new world order.
- be able to discuss critically the internal and external factors responsible for the rise and decline of the Muslim world from 15th to 19th century.
- be able to demonstrate in-depth understanding of the intellectual, cultural, social and economic scale of the Islamic civilisation.
- be able to evaluate critically the Muslim contribution to science and human civilisation.
- be able to analyse critically the effects of European colonisation on the modern condition of Muslim societies.
- be able to demonstrate critical ability to deduct theological, legal and spiritual meanings from the Qur'anic verses by following exegetical methodology.
