ISL560 Arabic in Exegesis of the Qur'an (8)
Abstract|
This subject will introduce students to primary sources of exegetical works written in Classical Arabic. Students will study exegetical works of classical scholars Ibn Kathir (d. 1373), Jalal al-Din Mahalli (d.1459) and Jalal al-Din Suyuti (d. 1505) in their original Arabic. |

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Revision of 'Ilm at-Tafsir (Science of Qur'anic exegesis) in Arabic
- Selected chapters from Tafsir riwayah (narration exegesis) by Ibn Kathir in Arabic
- Selected chapters from The classical tafsir al Jalalayn

Residential SchoolThis subject contains a optional 2 day residential school.
The purpose of the optional residential school is to provide an opportunity for exploration of the overall coursework covered. In addition to content review, this part of the course aims to facilitate an interactive session between the teaching academics and students.
Face to face teaching is an important part of learning a language. Students will be involved in small group exercises, discussions, visual presentation and one-on-one sessions with the subject coordinator, lecturers and tutors. This will enable the students and teaching staff to address any issues that may arise. Material and summary content covered in this session will be a valuable contribution towards the major assessment tasks.
