Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify the components of the communication model;
- be able to explain the fundamental concepts of the communication process;
- be able to practise, develop, refine and demonstrate written language skills so students are able to write clearly, correctly and concisely;
- be able to discuss the impact of non-verbal communication;
- be able to critically assess the main issues associated with ethical communication;
- be able to select an appropriate communication style and technique when delivering a message in different settings and to different audiences.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Fundamentals of communication.
- Interpersonal communication skills; listening, speaking, directing and instructing, response styles, conflict resolution strategies, non-verbal communication, persuasive communication, intercultural variations.
- Intrapersonal bases of effective communication: audience awareness, sender credibility, self-concept, empathy and assertiveness.
- Written communication skills.
- Functional writing techniques, everyday business writing tasks and special business writing tasks.
- Business communication ethics.
- Using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for effective communication.
