ITC512 Networking Concepts 2 (8)

Abstract

This subject is designed to provide students with experience in current and emerging networking technology. The subject provides students with the skills and practice needed to design, build and maintain small to medium-sized networks. The concepts covered in this subject enable students to develop skills related to advanced router configuration, LAN switching, VLANs, WAN technology and design. This subject is the second in a series of two subjects that closely follow the Cisco Networking Academy Program curriculum.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* describe OSI reference model and routing as well as network; planning and design considerations that are related to routing
* master the fundamentals of variable length subnet mask (VLSM) along with how and why to use it;
* configure, verify and troubleshoot RIPv2;
* Understand the fundamentals of link state routing protocols, single area OSPF concepts;
* configure single area OSPF protocol;
* compare, configure, verify and troubleshoot various routing protocols including IGRP and EIGRP;
* analyse and troubleshoot problems in LANs;
* discuss 802.3 LANs and the pros and cons of LAN segmentation with LAN design;
* describe the process of LAN switching;
* understand the spanning tree protocol (STP) and redundant topologies;
* describe the benefits of VLANs and the role that switches play in the creation of VLANs;
* configure, verify, save, delete and troubleshoot VLANs;
* describe VLAN trunking protocol;
* understand fundamentals of inner VLAN routing;
* describe the components of scaling networks with NAT and PAT;
* describe WAN encapsulation formats;
* describe WAN devices and technologies;
* describe methodologies that are used to design WANs;
* identify steps in WAN design;
* identify network capabilities;
* understand PPP protocol, ISDN and Frame Relay;
* describe how optical networks provide speed, data transportation, capacity and scalability; and
* describe how traditional voice, video and data networks are implemented.
