ITI510 Integrating Educational Technology (8)

Abstract

The goal of this subject is to provide students with the skills and opportunity to use action research in education institutions, businesses or organisations. Action research provides a method for trying ideas in practice as a means of improvement and as a means of increasing knowledge about teaching/training and learning. Students will use action research to identify underutilised educational technologies and plan to implement them in a learning setting.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to review any plans (past or present) to integrate technology into a standards-based curriculum;
  • be able to explain the characteristics of action research and how action research is suited to their own organisation/educational institution;
  • be able to plan an action research project as part of an organisation’s/educational institution’s improvement plan for learning;
  • be able to explore new ideas, strategies and specific tools for integrating technology into the curriculum;
  • be able to identify underutilised technologies within an organisation/educational institution;
  • be able to incorporate underutilised technologies within plans to address key organisational goals and improve student outcomes; and
  • be able to use technology to acquire, access, analyse and evaluate information.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Identifying and evaluating existing/underutilised ICT resources.
  • Aligning technology use with organisational goals.
  • Plan; Action; Observe; Reflect: characteristics of the action research cycle.
  • Designing an Action Research question to suit your own organisation.
  • Comparing and contrasting the action research model with other research models.
  • “Revised planning”- continuing the action research cycle.
  • Conceiving of/commencing a “Partner Project”.
  • The principles and skills involved in successful peer feedback.
  • Internet search, research and copyright.
  • Using ICT to develop Project-Based Learning, critical thinking and problem-solving.
