Abstract

This subject extends student knowledge into the interactions between police, the public and community. Topics including police work, discretion and accountability, occupational culture, deviance and corruption, models of policing, contemporary developments and miscarriages of justice will be explored. The subject will examine contemporary issues and perspectives on the role of police in community and society.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain the foundation, development and function of the police service in Australia, including community policing;
  • be able to synthesise different perspectives on the role of police in the community and society;
  • be able to explain and analyse police power and how the institutional and political power of the service also shapes the role of police;
  • be able to explain and analyse the nature of police culture in broad terms, and in more detail, in relation to discrimination;
  • be able to critically engage with debates in contemporary policing and key challenges to community policing;
  • be able to articulate their understanding clearly and cogently;
  • be able to use the work of major theorists and authors to inform their understanding;
  • be able to demonstrate a growing professional awareness by being professional in all communications and conduct with academic staff and other students, and through presentation of assignments

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Topics such as: Police Work, Discretion, and Accountability; Police Occupational Culture; Police Deviance and Corruption; Community Policing; Problem-Oriented Policing; Reactive Policing and Public Order Policing; Paramilitary and Zero-Tolerance Policing; Contemporary Developments in Policing: Technology; CCTV; Examples; Internationalisation; media and policing; Contemporary Developments in Policing: Cybercrime; Miscarriages of Justice will be covered.
