JST431 Psycho-Social Aspects of Correctional Management (8)

Abstract

This subject aims to develop professional knowledge and skills in
Correctional Management drawing specifically upon the literature of psychology and sociology. The psychological and sociological impact of correctional management on inmates, staff, managers and the wider community will be examined.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an advanced professional knowledge of organisational psychology and sociology as it impacts on corrections
- be able to demonstrate a consideration of the psychological and sociological impact of overcrowding, segregation, attempted suicide, institutionalisation, violence, prisoners of conscience and working in a prison
- be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of organisational theory
- be able to demonstrate an ability to apply theoretical constructs to practice
- be able to demonstrate a knowledge of alternative correctional approaches and their psychological and sociological impact
- be able to demonstrate practical, implementable strategies of correctional management that promote psychological health and social harmony.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Overview of Organisational Psychology relevant to Corrections. - Overview of Organisational Sociology relevant to Corrections. - Concepts of Management as applied to Corrections. - Psychological and sociological impact of overcrowding, segregation, attempted suicide, institutionalisation, violence, prisoners of conscience. - Strategies for ensuring humane correctional management. - Alternative approaches to Correctional Management.
