Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to critically engage with the methodological approaches used in criminological research
- be able to critically analyse the relationship between theory and method in criminological research
- be able to critically engage with the role of ethics in the research process
- be able to critically analyse the role and influence of official sources of information (such as statistics, government policy, media statements) in criminological research
- be able to transmit solutions to complex problems encountered in research design

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Investigation of the uses of official sources of information in the production of quantitative and qualitative criminological research
- Role of the state in the collection and the validation of social science research and statistics, and the practical implications of this role
- Power: reflexivity, positionalities and the role of social scientists
- Research design: the development of appropriate research designs considering constraints on the researcher and those being researched
- Research Methodologies
- Ethics and moral dilemmas in research
- Links between theory and methods in the research process
