Abstract

This subject examines all aspects of design and technical considerations of repairs and remakes relative to the jewellery industry. In particular, resizing rings, repairs to findings and fittings, repairs to stone settings, alteration to chain lengths, cleaning and polishing are addressed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to have the ability to successfully redesign and manufacture new pieces of jewellery keeping elements of an existing design
- be able to have the ability to successfully reproduce a piece of jewellery to exact specifications
- be able to thoroughly assess the conditions of a piece of jewellery prior to its alteration
- be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of and ability to undertake jewellery repairs including:
- be able to resize rings up or down
- be able to replace half or ¾ shank
- be able to replace claws and bezel settings
- be able to remake findings and fittings
- be able to alter chain lengths

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- redesign and manufacture of existing jewellery - remake existing jewellery to exact specifications - identifying the state of jewellery pieces - technical information will include for example: - resizing rings - replacing settings - replacing findings and fitting - altering chain lengths
