Abstract

A focused and independent study of one author from a substantial list in which students devise their own topic and course of reading in consultation with staff. The culmination of the semester's work is the production of a long essay.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to conceptualise a literary topic for independent study
- demonstrate that they have understood and have experienced the processes involved in literary research activity
- demonstrate that they have developed professional responsibility for autonomous academic study
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the historical, social, theoretical and literary contexts of the author chosen for study.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • - students choose an author for detailed reading and study
  • - students define and frame a topic for individual study and a programme of reading to support the topic, in consultation with staff
  • - students work independently in carrying out the course of study
  • - students produce a long essay of 3-4000 words which incorporates reading and research on the chosen author
