Abstract

Leaders are separated from followers in an asymmetrical relational dynamic (Collinson, 2005). This subject focuses on the role of power in the practice of leadership. Students will explore the dimensions and behaviours of power. For example the subject will explore control, resistance, positional power, powerlessness, compliance, dissent, influence, obedience, empowerment, and dependency. Students will work towards understanding their involvement in social situations and how power is mobilised in the practice of leadership.Contexts for power and leadership like organisations, and the relationship between leaders and followers will be the focus of the subject, as students work towards understanding their involvement in social situations and how power is mobilised in the practice of leadership.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify and discuss theories of power and how they relate to the practice of leadership;
  • be able to discuss complex dimensions and behaviours of power and acknowledge these dimensions and behaviours in real-world situations;
  • be able to build a theoretical framework for the practice of leadership in the context of power;
  • be able to recognise and articulate different ways of mobilising power the context of leadership; and
  • be able to put into practice learning about the theories of power in leader/follower relationships.
