Abstract|
MID441 focuses on woman-led midwifery care during 'normal' pregnancy, labour, birth, postnatal and the newborn period. Midwifery care that enhances and does not inhibit the physiological processes of pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal periods, including the initiation, establishment and continuation of breastfeeding will be emphasised. The final module of the subject involves contextualising current woman-led midwifery practice in an historical framework. As the student studies this subject, concurrent midwifery practice requirements (undertaken in MID443 or MID444 for pre-registration students) enhance the application of learning. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate knowledge of the anatomical, physiological, emotional, social and relationship changes that occur during pregnancy, labour, birth, postpartum, fetal to newborn transition and lactation;
- be able to apply knowledge, research evidence, skills and attitudes to enable woman-centred care, assessment and practice during normal pregnancy, labour and birth, postnatal/newborn period and lactation;
- be able to demonstrate knowledge of antenatal screening investigations and associated pre and post screening investigation counselling including being able to refer, request and interpret results of relevant laboratory testing;
- be able to assess, plan, provide and evaluate safe and effective midwifery care for women while protecting, promoting and supporting normal pregnancy, labour, birth and breastfeeding;
- be able to demonstrate competency in examination of the newborn and explore optimal parenting strategies based on the best possible evidence and knowledge of infant growth and development with parents;
- be able to actively support midwifery as a public health strategy and critically evaluate their own practice and develop skills to critique the health system;
- be able to utilise their knowledge of the normal to recognise any deviations from the normal during pregnancy, labour, birth, postnatal/newborn and lactation;
- be able to communicate information to facilitate decision making and while being an advocate for the primacy of choice and control for the woman during normal pregnancy, labour and birth, postpartum and breastfeeding;
- be able to analyse the history of midwives and women healers, and the impact of historical factors on contemporary midwifery practice.

- Module 3: Woman-led midwifery care during the postnatal/newborn periods
- Module 4: Protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding
- Module 5: Early parenting
- Module 6: History of midwifery

Residential SchoolThis subject contains a compulsory 6 day residential school.
The residential school is compulsory for Graduate Diploma of Midwifery pre-registration midwifery students only and is optional for registered midwives wishing to upgrade their qualifications. It is held at the beginning of the subject. It focuses on an introduction to midwifery, the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery program, woman-centred midwifery care during normal pregnancy, labour, birth, postnatal and the newborn period.
