MID443 Midwifery Practice (24)

Abstract

MID443 Midwifery Practice extends across the continuum of midwifery practice (minimum of 12 calendar months, but may be extended to ensure all experiences have been achieved and competency demonstrated), minimum 1500 required hours and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (2010) (NMBA) prescribed experiences. Whether studied 12 minimum months or extended for up to 18 months (it is anticipated that most students will have demonstrated competency in all required experiences in approximately 12-14 months), students are to demonstrate the same pre-determined level of competency. This means that before being deemed eligible to apply for registration as a midwife, students must demonstrate all prescribed (NMBA) (2010) competencies to the level of a beginning RM. MID443 and MID444 are identical subjects and the two codes are used purely to meet the online learning needs of different cohorts of students.
This subject is based on the compulsory midwifery practice component of the pre-registration course. Students are required to demonstrate safe and competent midwifery practice commensurate with their period in the course at the time of each of their midwifery practice appraisals (minimum of five). Essential midwifery experiences identified by the (NMBA) (2010) must be achieved in order for the student to be eligible to apply for registration as a midwife. Achievement of these midwifery skills and experiences are recorded, assessed and reflected on in this subject.

This  is a requirement of the ANMC, the accrediting body.

Specialised Resources

MID443/MID444 students are employed by a partnering maternity unit where they are contracted for 1500 hours as they develop competence to the level of a beginning registered midwife.
