MID452 Midwifery as Primary Health Care 1 (8)

Abstract

This subject introduces the midwifery student to the concepts of cultural safety, security and humility in midwifery practice; especially when supporting individual women who identify as Indigenous Australian or women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The special needs of women from vulnerable or disadvantaged groups, including those with a disability are explored in the context of pregnancy, labour/birthing and the postnatal period. Midwifery support of women at either end of the childbearing age continuum is explored. Primary health care is considered in the context of midwives providing primary health care for individual women. The aim of this subject is to encourage a broader understanding of midwifery issues and their implications for practice. The subject suggests ways to enhance and develop knowledge and skills that will assist the student to effectively practise woman-centred midwifery care in the primary health care context.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to accept accountability and responsibility for own actions through recognising their own attitudes, biases, power, professional privilege and values and their potential impact on midwifery practice;
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of awareness, sensitivity, safety, security and humility in the context of being culturally competent;
  • be able to recognise the specific needs of women identifying as Indigenous Australian;
  • be able to demonstrate a valuing of the cultural respect framework (knowledge and awareness, skilled practice and behaviour, strong relationships with women, equity of outcomes);
  • be able to provide culturally safe midwifery care for the pregnant woman who identifies as being from a culturally and linguistically diverse background, including communicating to facilitate decision making through working effectively with a professional interpreter;
  • be able to assess, plan, provide and evaluate safe and effective midwifery care for the woman with needs related to disability, assisting the woman with a disability to optimise her self care, care of her infant and autonomous potential;
  • be able to assess, plan, provide and evaluate safe and effective midwifery care for the woman at either end of the childbearing age continuum;
  • be able to base midwifery practice on ethical decision making;
  • be able to apply the principles of primary health care to woman-led midwifery care.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Module 1: Principles of cultural safety in midwifery practice;
  • Module 2: Midwifery support of women who identify as being Indigenous Australian;
  • Module 3: Midwifery support of women who are from a culturally and linguistically diverse background;
  • Module 4: Midwifery support of women who has a disability;
  • Module 5: Midwifery support of women who are adolescent or older than 35.
