Abstract

This subject introduces students to advanced leadership practice, which is founded in Biblical and theological principles, together with a critical review of church practice. Particular models of church leadership are addressed together with their critical application within a given ministry context. Students will be challenged to develop and implement more effective models of leadership for ministry in the Australian context.

be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of leadership and authority in the Christian tradition, with particular reference to the Australian church context
be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of particular model/s or practices of leadership and their application in a given context
be able to analyse critically the place of leadership within a given ministry context
be able to demonstrate advanced skills in the development and implementation of new models of leadership
be able to demonstrate an evidence based approach to the transformation of practice within a given ministry context
be able to demonstrate an understanding of key management issues within an Australian church context

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:

Biblical and theological principles of leadership within ministry
Leadership and authority in the Christian tradition
Models of transformative practice in ministry leadership
Key contemporary contexts, e.g., ageing, gender, cross cultural communities, reconciliation, etc.
The interrelationship between leadership and management
Key management issues in the Australian church context
The place of communal worship and sacramental life in leadership and transformation
Transformative pastoral practice
