NRS543 Clinical Management in Palliative Care Nursing (16)

Abstract

Advanced knowledge and skills in cancer and palliative care nursing for patients across the lifespan will be developed in this subject. Comprehensive health assessment and person-centred decision making principles will underpin learning in this subject. Management of symptoms with an emphasis on pain management and identification of oncology and palliative care emergencies will be addressed. Palliative care and clinical issues for the non-cancer patient with a life limiting illness will also be addressed in this subject.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to competently implement treatment modalities for palliation in the persons chosen care setting.
  • be able to identify oncology and palliative care emergencies and initiate therapeutic interventions.
  • be able to critically examine the palliative care and clinical issues for the non-cancer patient with a life limiting illness.
  • be able to comprehensively analyse the multiple sources of pain assessment and management.
  • be able to identify and analyse the pathophysiology of common symptoms in palliative care.
  • be able to identify, analyse and acknowledge cultural and social factors affecting palliative care.
  • be able to identify and analyse psychological and spiritual aspects of palliative care.
  • be able to implement palliative care management strategies in conjunction with the person and their carers

  • The recognition of and interventions for delirium and or dementia
