NUT508 Public Health Nutrition Practice (8)

Abstract

This subject requires students to plan and to implement some aspect of a community nutrition program as part of a six week placement within a community or food industry setting to ensure they reach entry level dietetic competency in community and public health nutrition as assessed by the supervising placement dietitian.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • - be able to apply primary health care and public health principles and practice to an advanced standard;
  • - be able to use demographic, epidemiological and anthropometric data in the development of health needs to inform program development and nutrition issues;
  • - be able to demonstrate a deep understanding of nutrition related health problems in Australian communities with particular attention to disadvantaged populations including Indigenous, refugee, and rural communities;
  • - be able to discuss the role of food and nutrition policy development in public health;
  • - be able to apply the underpinning principles of the planning, implementation and evaluation of nutrition programs in a community setting;
  • - be able to develop and evaluate appropriate intervention strategies within community and public health settings for different population groups;
  • - be able to demonstrate entry level skills in planning, implementing and evaluating a group education session;
  • - be able to provide evidence of reflective practice during the process of program planning, implementation and/or evaluation;
  • - be able to demonstrate entry level competencies in community nutrition standards for practice.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • primary health care and public health within the context of the Australian health system.
  • food and nutrition policy development.
  • the use of epidemiological, demographic and behavioural data in health promotion/ public health programs.
  • the principles of community nutrition education programs: planning (eg. the health issue, target group, stakeholders, aims, objectives, performance indicators, resources needed), implementation and evaluation (using process and impact evaluation methods).
  • communicating with stakeholders (the community, other government and non-government organisations, health professionals).
  • factors affecting the success of community nutrition programs in achieving sustainable outcomes.
  • the role of reflective practice in community and public health nutrition.

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 30 days duration. Students are required to undertake a 6 week community placement. On placement they will undertake
a community based nutrition project and will be expected at the end of the placement to reach entry level
dietetic competency.
