PHC402 Paramedic Intensive Care for Adults (16)

Abstract

This subject builds on the experienced paramedic's knowledge of the assessment and management of critically ill or injured adult patients. The subject challenges the paramedic to explore the essentials of airway, respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological assessments using intensive care level skills coupled with advanced diagnostic tools. Using a case based approach, key treatment concepts are then applied while integrating knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology for critical patient presentations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to define adult intensive care in the prehospital context and demonstrate an understanding of critical thinking
be able to describe and explain the specific skills and competencies necessary for intensive care paramedic practice
be able to describe and explain the key fundamentals of intensive care including patient assessment, history taking, monitoring, airway management, mechanical ventilation, cardiac care and management of shock
be able to apply the principles of intensive care to key critical medical presentations including respiratory, cardiac, septic, and metabolic emergencies
be able to apply the principles of intensive care to key critical traumatic patient presentations including multisystem trauma, neurological injuries and toxicological emergencies
be able to demonstrate an expanded capacity for using both evidence based practice and professional reflective practice in the field
