PHY503 Medical Imaging Physics (8)

Abstract

This subject provides high-school science teachers and others, an introduction to the physics and basic instrumentation of the modern medical imaging technologies of ultrasound, x-rays, magnetic resonance imaging and nuclear medicine. The subject brings to life basic physics principles through their relevance and practical application to modern medical diagnosis.

The completion of a BSc/BAppSc/BSecEd degree or equivalent.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
understand the basic physics and instrumentation of diagnostic ultrasound, x-rays and computerised tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and nuclear medicine;
be competent in logically solving problems in all topics using basic mathematical methods;
have an appreciation for the sorts of laboratory experiments that could potentially be performed by, or demonstrated to high school students in the lab or class room; and
be capable of launching into further independent study in the physics and instrumentation of one or more of the above medical imaging modalities.
