Abstract

This subject delivers the foundational operational safety and tactics skills required by the operational police practitioner. It introduces students to the ethical and professional application of basic self-defence, operational communications and tactical options. This is achieved by requiring students to consider the theory and practice underpinning the use of these skills and to demonstrate the application of those skills and outline the justification for their use within supervised practical sessions.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to demonstrate the approved use and articulate the justifications for the tactical options of: baton, tactical disengagement, Conducted Electrical Weapon (CEW), communication, contain and negotiate, firearm, oleoresin capsicum defensive spray, weaponless control and officer presence;
be able to demonstrate the approved procedures and articulate the justifications for their use in the following: high risk incidents, edged weapon defence, transitional drills, searching, handcuffing, bomb awareness, public order policing, building approach, entry and search, motor vehicle stops and searching techniques, mandatory training scenarios and weapon retention; and
be able to demonstrate the use of the Tactical Options Model and articulate the justifications for the decision making used in applying it in Mandatory Training scenarios.
