Abstract|
This subject focuses on the probationary constable performing duties in an "assist" role. It focuses on the application of the key police practice domains of legislation,investigation, professional practice and community engagement.The focus on application requires students to engage in problem solving and decision making in the field.I provides opportunities to combine theoretical knowledge with workplace practice. It utilises authentic workplace tasks to build an Operational Portfolio of competency which demonstrate the knowledge, skills and qualities required for effective operational policing practice in an assist role.

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to complete their individual workloads as a probationary constable under supervision
- be able to render assistance as a probationary constable under supervision
- be able to perform operational policing duties at a professional level as identified in the NSWPF Operational Portfolio
- be able to apply legislation to different operational policing situations
- be able to apply investigative practices to different operational policing situations
- be able to utilise communications strategies for effective operational policing

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- operational policing: shift preparation; undertakng patrols/environmental scanning; operational safety; responding to incidents;information gathering, collating and recording
- evidence, criminal defences and Brief of Evidence preparation
- pre-arrest powers
- crime trends and hot spots
- engaging with diverse groups in the community
- managing individual workload and resilience
- professional decision-making and developing a leadership role
- social media

Work Place Learning| This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 36 days duration.
Workplace learning is undertaken through students engaging in policing duties in the capacity of a Probationary Constable. Students will be assessed on their application of skills through an Operational Portfolio and will work approximately 36 hours per week over a 12 week period.
In terms of weighting it is recognisded as 40% of the subject.
