Abstract

The subject outlines the principles and practice of producing and managing winter crops in Australian farming systems. Strong themes in this subject are the management of vegetation and soil resources, the water use efficiency of crops and crop/pasture rotations, and sustainable production. A range of issues and developments in farming, from precision farming to organic farming, are explored.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
understand and have knowledge of:
(a) the principles and practice of the production and management of winter crops within the farming systems operating in Australia
(b) sustainable practices for the management of soil, water and weeds in farming systems
(c) crop rotations and winter crop species for Australian conditions
(d) developments in conservation farming, such as crop monitoring, precision farming, organic farming and crops for special markets and purposes.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
(a) Farming systems and practices, including ley pastures and common crop rotations (b) Principles of crop selection and establishment (c) Overcoming the limitations to crop yields in Australia (d) The management of specific winter crops for quality grain production (e) Developments in conservation farming

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school.
