PSC350 Advanced Soil Management (8)

Abstract

As land use pressures on environmental systems intensify, so do the impacts on soil resources. The primary purpose of this subject is to equip students to develop effective and innovative land use and soil management strategies for optimising the use of the soil resource for specific productivity outcomes as well as conserving soil as a living ecosystem. Particular emphasis will be placed on soil assessment and sustainable soil management strategies and methods.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Be able to review the relevant literature and related professional sources in order to synthesize current thinking on the issues and challenges of sustainable soil management
Be able to describe and evaluate leading edge techniques for soil management in a variety of land use systems
Be able to describe contemporary soil survey and analysis techniques to audit soil characteristics as a requirement for effective land use planning, including impact assessment
Be able to design soil management systems to meet the requirements of soil ecosystem services and landscape functions
Be able to apply strategies for sustainable soil management within a selected land use/management context
Be able to critically discuss concepts underpinning sustainable soil management.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
contemporary issues, challenges and approaches in soil management soil quality; soil health and soil ecosystem services: holistic approaches to soil management the role of soil ecology in different soil management systems recent developments in soil survey and land use planning - approach, method and techniques use of remote sensing and related technologies for soil survey and assessment soil management systems for intensive land use, eg, soil aspects of precision agriculture case studies of contemporary approaches to soil restoration and sustainable soil management recent advances in technologies and management systems for soil management
