PSY212 Psychological Dimensions of Disability (8)

Abstract

This subject deals with disabilities encountered in community and welfare settings. Students learn to give accurate descriptions of such disabilities and the abilities possessed by the persons involved, to be aware of individual variations, to describe the origins of disability and to understand the psychological and social concomitants of disability. They also gain limited experience in the management and self management of persons with a disability.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* understand the nature of common disabilities and how they affect the person
* understand social judgements in relation to disabilities
* be able to describe the abilities of people with disabilities and individual differences amongst these people
* have a knowledge of the origins of disability and how they affect the psychological and social environment of the period with the disability
* have some limited knowledge of the management and self-management of people with disabilities
