SCI103 Communicating Environmental Data (8)

Abstract

Communicating Environmental Data addresses general but core skills and concepts that will prepare the student to engage successfully with other CSU subjects, namely the ones related to spatial sciences. The subject addresses effective and efficient communication and visualization techniques and introduces current environmental applications using spatial data. The spatial applications will showcase the importance of using spatial sciences to cope with environmental challenges acknowledged currently. The subject has no residential school. On completion, students will be able to illustrate methods of communicating environmental data; to select correctly data visualization tools and to analyse spatial data and to assess its relevance through current real-life applications.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introduction to communication and visualization techniques
  • Characteristics of spatial and environmental data
  • Environmental data, and its sources, acquisition, storage, integrity, and relationship with information and knowledge
  • Methods and software for communicating spatial and non-spatial data as the precursor to statistical and/or scientific evaluation
  • Spatial data acquisition tools: global positioning systems, remote sensing, image analysis and geographical information systems
  • Applications of spatial science for a range of scientific disciplines including environmental science
