Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify the main theoretical approaches to the study of gender relations
- be able to describe historical shifts in attitudes to women and family structures
- be able to identify the ways in which social institutions reproduce and regulate gender and sexuality
- be able to critically relate academic debates about gender and family to the practices of daily life in different cultures, both urban and rural

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Introducing sociology of gender and the family - Introduction and history of relationships and family over time; Sociological perspectives on relationships and families
- Focusing on historical and contemporary issues - The diversity of family and relationships; Sex gender and families
- From personal to structural - Love, commitment, partnering and relating beyond cohabitation; Fertility, technology, parenting and childcare
- Growing older, growing apart and beginning again - Work: public, private and the reconstitution of families; Intimate partner violence; Ageing, care and intergenerational relationships; New families and new relationships
