Abstract

In this subject you will explore language and cognition, and sensory-motor skill development across the lifespan. You will gain an understanding of recent developments in speech pathology scope of practice.

You will reflect on your personal experiences and knowledge of communication and swallowing across the lifespan and extend your knowledge by engaging in individual and group learning experiences that investigate theories of communication and swallowing development and maintenance, including critical reflection on linguistic and developmental theories as well as cultural/social beliefs.

You will participate in a range of online learning experiences including individual activities and assessments, as well as group work. Weekly learning activities offer opportunity for you to share your ideas and knowledge and learn from others in interactive learning experiences including completing structured discussion threads/topics, via real-time online tutorials and in group assessment tasks and feedback. You will develop awareness of strategies used to enhance communication in everyday environments, use creative and technical skills to communicate with non-specialist audiences.

To demonstrate mastery of this learning outcomes and learning experiences you will  design,write and develop an online resource for an identified audience that demonstrates your understanding of the core theoretical knowledge of speech pathology practice and  investigate and synthesise information from a range of resources to analyse given case studies to justify the development of strategies to support and promote language, cognition and sensory-motor skill development and maintenance.

You will use the CSU Learning Management System, Interact2 to engage in learning activities with your peers and utilise a range of online technologies and tools to engage in group work, to view and engage with audiovisual material and to complete learning activities and assessment tasks.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of typical development and milestones of language, cognition and sensory-motor skills, including understanding of recent developments, through investigation and synthesis of a range of resources and application of milestones to life stages.This will be demonstrated by creating an online resource for a specific audience and completing a series of case studies.
  • Apply models of evidence-based practice to explore communication and swallowing development and maintenance, based on critical reflection on linguistic and developmental theories as well as cultural/social beliefs.This will be demonstrated by creating an online resource for a specific audience and completing a series of case studies.
  • Synthesise and interpret knowledge of milestones, critique of theory, and cultural/social beliefs to justify the development of strategies to support and promote language, cognition and sensory-motor skill development and maintenance. This will be demonstrated by creating an online resource for a specific audience and completing a series of case studies.
  • Use creative, technical and communication skills, including a range of written and ICT skills to communicate with non-specialist audiences. This will be demonstrated by creating an online resource for a specific audience and participating in weekly online activities.
  • Engage in, and contribute to, group learning and feedback processes and reflect on your experiences of group work. This will be demonstrated through weekly interactive learning activities and the development of an online resource.
