SPH516 Planning practice-based research projects in speech pathology (8)

Abstract

Using the knowledge of research principles and methods gained in earlier subjects (SPH511, SPH512, SPH513, SPH522, and SPH523), you will demonstrate that you have investigated, analysed and synthesised information from a range of sources, using an Evidence-Based Practice framework. You will then apply your findings to plan a substantial research based capstone project in consultation with project stakeholders. The research must involve collaboration with others, gain ethical approval if required, and focus on prevention, education and/or promotion of communication and swallowing issues, or speech pathology assessment and intervention.

This project will be planned during a workplace learning experience (completed in SPH515/17 and 525/27), supervised by your clinical educators and supported by CSU academic and general staff. In this subject you will:
  • Identify research aims
  • Select a methodological approach
  • Investigate ethical considerations and ways of addressing these and
  • Prepare for your research project.

This project will be continued in SPH526 (Conducting and evaluating research based projects in speech pathology), where you will conduct your research and share your findings.

To demonstrate mastery of the subject learning outcomes and learning experiences you will write a research proposal and literature review and submit an ethics application if required. You will use research databases, CSU Interact2 subject site and online communication tools (discussion boards/wikis/chat room/blog etc).

  • Demonstrate knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to speech pathology practice. This will be demonstrated in a literature review and research proposal for your project.
  • Demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and reflect critically on theory and professional practice. This will be demonstrated by completing a literature review and research proposal.
  • Apply cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories in order to develop, justify and communicate an ethical and clinically relevant research proposal.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Identify research aims
  • Select methodological approach
  • Ethical considerations
  • Preparing to conduct your research

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 6 to 10 days duration. Students will plan a substantial research-based project in consultation with community stakeholders, and associated with a workplace learning experience. The project will take the form of a health promotion, quality improvement, assessment/evaluation activity. Students will be expected to cover the travel and accommodation costs associated with their workplace learning experience.
