THL494 Contemporary Discipleship (8)

Abstract

This subject explores the nature and character of the discipleship aligned with the words and works of Jesus Christ and expressed in the contemporary Australian context. Through the exploration of biblical, theological, historical and contemporary perspectives on discipleship it provides an opportunity for students to develop an integrated understanding of how discipleship can be expressed in diverse contexts.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to discuss critically the New Testament patterns of discipleship;
- be able to evaluate critically the challenges that contemporary contexts present to the practice of discipleship;
- be able to discuss critically the individual and communal dimensions of the call to discipleship;
- be able to evaluate and analyse critically a range of contemporary models of discipleship;
- be able to articulate their own critical theology of discipleship.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
1. New Testament patterns of discipleship; 2. Jesus as model for discipleship ("imitatio Christi"); 3. Historical perspectives on discipleship; 4. Theological perspectives on discipleship; 5. The "disciple community"; 6. Discipleship within contemporary contexts; 7. Discipleship as political responsibility; 8. Discipleship as mission, mission as discipleship; 9. Discipleship as vocation; 10. A theology of discipleship.
