ULM503 The Higher Education Environment and University Governance (8)

Abstract

This subject examines and builds an understanding and appreciation of contemporary governance theory and practice within the Australian and higher education context. The subject also explores the roles and responsibilities of university governance mechanisms. Particular attention is given to the participant’s leadership role in university governance and the implications for ethical and financially sustainable practice within a highly politicised tertiary environment.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to critically reflect to make sense of the complexities and contestations of leading in the academic environment;
  • be able to evaluate the impact and implications of various political, economic, social and technological changes in the tertiary education landscape on their leadership practice;
  • be able to analyse contemporary issues relevant to university governance within the dynamic higher education environment; and
  • be able to communicate and enact governance knowledge and ideas within the context of a complex and highly political internal (CSU) and external environment.

  • The concept of the university and its transformation
  • Contemporary issues in university governance
  • Re-imagining the university
