Abstract

This subject will introduce the history, principles and applications of typography as a means of expression and communication. It will also examine the relationship between type and image within the context of both print and web. Students will explore page structure and the use of grids within single and double page print layouts as well as multiple web page layouts, beginning to build an appreciation of related production processes.

be able to understand and demonstrate the principles of designing with type and image
be able to employ grids to design a variety of print and web page layouts
be able to demonstrate a critical approach to a variety of page layouts and information
be able to work independently on digital design briefs

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:

Introduction to type: history, principles and applications
Selection of typefaces and their relationship to content, imagery, colour and context
Introduction to layouts and grids: print and web
Introduction to hierarchy (visual and information), readability and legibility and their roles in the design solution
Introduction to scanning, file sizes, formats and colour spaces (CMYK, RGB and web safe)
Introduction to production processes
