Abstract

This subject will introduce the history, principles and applications of typography as a means of expression and communication. It will also examine the relationship between type and image within the context of both print and web. Students will explore page structure and the use of grids within single and double page print layouts as well as multiple web page layouts, beginning to build an appreciation of related production processes.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify a variety of typefaces and have an understanding of their associated history, principles and applications
  • be able to demonstrate a critical approach to font selection for different applications
  • be able to understand and demonstrate the principles of designing with type and image
  • be able to employ grids to design a variety of print and web page layouts
  • be able to demonstrate a critical approach to a variety of page layouts and information
  • be able to work independently on digital design briefs

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introduction to type: history, principles and applications
  • Selection of typefaces and their relationship to content, imagery, colour and context
  • Introduction to layouts and grids: print and web
  • Introduction to hierarchy (visual and information), readability and legibility and their roles in the design solution
  • Introduction to scanning, file sizes, formats and colour spaces (CMYK, RGB and web safe)
  • Introduction to production processes
