VPA317 Design Management (8)

Abstract

This subject examines the extensive process involved in managing a design project, from understanding the initial brief through to researching and developing appropriate and effective solutions. This subject also aims to give students the opportunity to liaise with clients, participate in team work and evaluate outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- demonstrate an understanding of dealing with clients and their specific needs
- be able to take information, evaluate it and prepare a well defined brief
- demonstrate an understanding of the many roles involved in managing a design project
- demonstrate an ability to work effectively in teams
- demonstrate sufficient skills to plan, define and design an appropriate outcome for each brief
- demonstrate an ability to implement and review a project
- demonstrate an understanding of the role of design management for professional and community organisations

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
a) project clarification including: creative requirements, commercial requirements, technical requirements, budget and resources b) project road map and time line including: project phases and work stages such as preproduction, production, maintenance and evaluation c) project research and strategy including: defining a direction, brainstorming, creative outcomes, the look and feel and technical considerations d) project specification including: project objectives, success criteria, marketing, budget and functionality e) project content including: text, imagery, audio, video, file structures, back up, copywriting and storyboards f) project design, build and test including: importance of meetings, tools and materials, resolving issues, staying in touch, work in progress, approaches to getting sign-off, managing clients' expectations and documentation g) project review and evaluation.
